Visual Testing

Also known as Visual Inspection, Visual Testing is the original method of NDT. It is easily carried out, inexpensive and does not require specialist equipment.

Visual Testing (VT) is typically the first step in the examination process to inspect a variety of product forms including castings, forgings, machined components and weld elements.

Many defects are surface-breaking and can be detected by careful visual inspection. Much of the success of visual inspection depends on the surface condition and the lighting arrangements. VT can be enhanced by a variety of methods ranging from low powered magnifying glasses to boroscopes.

At Testa all our NDT technicians are qualified to industry recognised PCN (personnel certification in non-destructive testing) in accordance with BS EN ISO 9712.

We can provide PCN-qualified technicians to carry out Visual Testing on castings, forgings or welded components.

The advantages of VT include: the most affordable or lowest cost NDT method. The reason being is that the inspector can conduct a visual inspection with little or no equipment. It is a portable testing method and it requires very little part preparation.
