What is Ultrasonic Testing?

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is a highly effective non-destructive testing method used to detect internal and surface flaws in materials. By utilizing high-frequency sound waves, UT plays a vital role in ensuring the integrity and reliability of components in various industries.

How does Ultrasonic Testing work?

​

The UT process involves several key steps:

  1. Preparation: The surface of the test object is cleaned to remove any contaminants, such as dirt or grease, that could affect the accuracy of the inspection.

  2. Coupling: A coupling agent, often a gel or liquid, is applied to facilitate the transmission of sound waves between the probe and the test material.

  3. Transmitting Sound Waves: An ultrasonic transducer emits high-frequency sound waves into the material. When these waves encounter a flaw or boundary, they reflect back to the transducer.

  4. Detection and Analysis: The reflected sound waves are analysed to determine the presence, size, and type of any flaws within the material.
