What is Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing?

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is a highly advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) technique designed to detect flaws and measure thickness within a material. Unlike traditional ultrasonic testing, PAUT uses multiple sound beams that can be electronically steered and focused to provide detailed imaging, making it ideal for complex inspections.

How does Phased Array work?

The process involves the following key steps:

Preparation: The test surface is thoroughly cleaned to remove any contaminants that could interfere with signal quality.

Probe Positioning and Calibration: A specialized phased array probe is positioned on the material’s surface. The probe emits multiple ultrasonic beams, which are calibrated to focus on specific areas or depths.

Electronic Steering of Beams: Unlike conventional UT, PAUT allows the operator to steer the beams electronically, adjusting angles and focus points for a more comprehensive view. This process creates a cross-sectional view of the test material.

Inspection and Evaluation: The ultrasonic waves travel through the material and reflect back to the probe when they encounter flaws or inconsistencies. These reflections are recorded and displayed as real-time images, allowing the inspector to detect and evaluate any flaws with high precision.
